Dayna, July 2010

Outdoor photoshoot with Dayna, Ottawa, Ontario, 30 July 2010.

For some reason I hadn't photographed my friend and stage actress Dayna in nearly three years, so I'm hoping this makes up for it. This shoot was a last-minute opportunity at the start of a long weekend, where by some miracle our schedules and good weather aligned briefly for a few hours. The originally planned location turned out to be fenced off due to a nearby festival, so we scrambled to an alternate nearby.

At mid-afternoon on a pleasant sunny day, the hard sunlight necessitated keeping to the shadows and using a reflector to bounce light into the scene. After losing a bunch of time temporarily repairing a flaky light stand for the reflector (again...), we managed to get rolling and did two wardrobe sets.

Towards the end of the shoot, several of Ottawa's "finest" showed up to hang out nearby, much to Dayna's delight I'm sure. They appeared to be ready to provide area security in the event she was harrassed by a threatening bunny or squirrel. :D

Outdoor photoshoot with Jazmine, Pinhey's Point estate, Dunrobin, Ontario, 12 July 2010.

This shoot was amid an afternoon of highly variable weather ahead of a severe storm front. Lighting conditions varied widely, and the wind made setting up equipment a challenge at times. That said, the shoot was a success.

I had the pleasure of "breaking in" a great new model---a deliciously dusky, smoky-eyed fitness instructor named Jazmine. Fit and focussed, Jazmine was great to work with.

Also new for me was the location, a 17th-century estate on the banks of the Ottawa River. Featuring stone buildings and ruins, flower gardens and rustic fences, the location offers endless variety of compositions.

Many thanks go to Jazmine's friend Rachael for her assistance during the shoot :)

Pima Air & Space Museum, Tucson, Arizona, 12 May 2010.

During a trip to Phoenix, Arizona for a conference, I got to drive down to Tucson to visit the immense Pima aircraft collection (http://www.pimaair.org/). I spent most of my time roaming among the outdoor aircraft displays. The photos here are just some of the historic aircraft on site—there are many more(!).

The aircraft names are as listed on the Pima website. I used to think I was pretty knowledgable about aircraft types until I visited this place—I could barely name a fraction of them!

If you ever visit Pima, plan to spend an entire day there if you can, half for the indoor displays and half outdoor. Definitely plan on a full day if you also intend to take the bus tour of the nearby AMARG "Aircraft Boneyard" (309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group)—I didn't have time during my visit. And bring lots of sunscreen and water!

Book "Antarctica - Due South"

"Antarctica - Due South"

by Kyle D. Jackson, 2009.

I custom-designed this very special photobook as an enduring chronicle of my voyage to Antarctica in November 2008. The 270 full-colour photos of Antarctic landscape and wildlife were painstakingly selected from thousands of my images, and are accompanied by descriptions and narrative text to take you through this fantastic journey.

These high-quality photobooks are printed and bound by Photobook Canada in Toronto (http://www.photobookcanada.com), using the same processes as wedding photo albums. Featuring a striking panoramic hardcover, each book is 8.5 by 11 inches in size, 5/8 inches thick, and weighs nearly 1 pound. There are 126 numbered pages printed in vivid colour on acid-free archival quality paper. Each book is hand-bound using a strong, durable side-stitch technique to ensure a lifetime of enjoyment.

Copies are available for CAD$100 (lowered price) plus shipping by emailing me at photos@loneleaf.ca. (Yes, these books are expensive to produce in small quantities.)

A portion of the proceeds from each copy will go towards carbon offset projects to help combat Global Climate Change due to greenhouse gas emissions. My goal is for each book to help eliminate approximately one ton per year of equivalent carbon dioxide emissions.

For a limited time, each copy will also include an 8 x 10 inch photograph from my Antarctica collection, plus a 30-minute audio-visual slideshow on CD/DVD. (Note: slideshow runs on Windows PC only, and generally requires a fast video card to run well. It is possible it will not run well or at all on some PCs, and thus it is offered as a bonus item with my book without any guarantees. It is my hope that it does run on your PC, so you too may enjoy this light-and-sound version of my book.)
